This design is based on the AV-8B Harrier II (BuNo 165572), one of the aircraft flown by LtCol Christopher “Otis” Raible. In April 2012, LtCol Raible (call sign: Otis), was serving as Commanding Officer of Marine Attack Squadron 211 based at Camp Bastion in the Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan.
On the night of Friday, September 14, 2012, shortly after 10:15pm, 15 enemy insurgents wearing U.S. Army uniforms, armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and suicide vests had breached the perimeter at Camp Bastion. LtCol Raible quickly donned his body armour and armed only with his semi-automatic 9-millimeter pistol began to coordinate and lead an aggressive counterattack. Some 4 hours later, the Marines had killed 14 of the insurgents and captured one. Sadly, during the attack and had both been killed by shrapnel from RPGs.
LtCol Raible received numerous military honors including Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, Combat Action Ribbon and an Air Medal with Strike 15 Award.
Sgt Atwell's military honors include the Purple Heart, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (x2) , Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the NATO Service Medal.
